* NEW DOG: meet Matilda!

Matilda is a 2 year old Beagle/Bassett Hound mix recently surrendered by her owners. We think they got puppies out of her and then dumped her. She is very needy at the moment and loves to howl and bark randomly while she walks around. Lately we have been walking her with another dog and that helps keep her quiet.

* NEW DOG: meet John!

John is a 4 year old American Staffordshire mix. He was rescued from the city pound and was previously surrendered by his owners due to landlord-lease restrictions.

* NEW DOG: meet Elle!

Elle is a 1 year old Plott hound/Lab mix, rescued from the city pound. She was originally abandoned and found around West 147 street in Harlem. She is a really playful and loving dog that can use extra discipline and commands.

: ) Rosie finds her new home!!

Rosie, above with her new owners, went home the next day after Cody left for his new home. Such amazing luck for both wonderful dogs, ending in such good homes!!

Big THANK YOU to Mandy and Julie and the rest of Brooklyn Dog Runners for bringing some neat toys and much needed supplies for the all the BARC dogs and Cats. Brooklyn Dog Runners, along with Presents 4 Pets and NAPPS (National Association of Professional Pet Sitters), helped organize this years collection drive for National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, from November 1-7.

Presents 4 Pets is a nationwide program designed to help support local shelter and rescue groups.

- The Monks of New Skete

The Monks of New Skete are well known in the dog community for breeding and training their own breed of shepherds called the New Skete Shepherds. They raise and train them in their monastery located in Cambridge, New York, where they live among a monastic community that abides by the Eastern Orthodox Church traditions. Their approach to training dogs lies in more attitude than method, they believe that there has to be an underlying attitude that is present in an owner's relationship with their dog that carries through, regardless of what type of training they are doing with the dog. The Monks have published 2 books on the subject of training dogs, How to be Your Dog's Best Friend and The Art of Raising a Puppy, both best sellers and both full of insights in properly choosing and raising any breed into your own liking. They also published a meditation photo book called I & Dog, which illustrates the spiritual dimensions of the dog-human relationship.



The Monks also made a 3 DVD series on training your dog and they also offer a 4 week training course in their monastery for anyone interested in bringing their dogs to be trained by them.
