< Belated Congratz to London!

London who came to BARC in February and was returned 2 weeks ago because he nipped at his owners when ever he had a chance, have found a better responsible family who knows his insecurities. The former adoptees, I think, were asking too much of London, when they returned him, they included copies of London's Dog psychic evalutation as well as different trainers evaluation. Funny thing too is, the first answer given by London according to the Psychic when asked the question Why are So Nervous?, his response was I'm scared of my new owners.

>> Brenda meets Chance!

[first 5 minutes]

If you've been reading and seeing Brenda's progress as I walk and socialize her with other BARC dogs that are considered difficult, this is considered the granddaddy of them all. Chance is a superdog, a definite Alpha, and Brenda, who positions herself an Alpha, would seem proper a matchup for good positive reinforcement. These 2 superdogs meet for the first time under my supervision. Started them off shortleashed on each arm and blocking who ever starts the lunge/pounce with my body. Still in the safety here, no snarlings, no teeth, no aggression so far. Brenda was testing me the whole time, trying to trigger a reaction from Chance. Trying to chase him around and get him to play back, she was met with Chance sitting still everytime I yell Sit, and keeping his attention on me. Brenda kept trying the first 20 minutes, with Chance just sitting there, not reacting. She eventually gave up and 10 blocks later..Buddies! Now I can trust walking them in one hand, side by side. NICE!

+ New pitbull rescue show on Animal Planet

Animal Planet premiered last friday the 1st of a 6-part documentary called Pit bull and Parolees. It chronicles the Villalobos Rescue Center out of Los Angeles, which is considered the largest pit bull rescue group in the US, and is ran by parolees and ex-convicts. It was started 15 years ago by Tia Maria Torres, and her 4 kids. She started the parolee/ex-convict hiring program a couple years ago after meeting her 2nd husband, a former tattoo artist and one of her prison penpals. The show focuses on the ex-convicts and the pits they rescue and their reactions and interactions with the abusers and others, that uses the breed for harmful means. Its pretty much like Rescue Ink except its all about the pit bulls.
The episodes air every friday, at 10 pm on Animal Planet.

*NEW DOGS: meet Nina and Mimi!

Mimi is a 10 mth-old Staffie mix, who has a deformed right arm. She functions normally with it though, and is very sweet. Nina is also a 10-mth-old pit mix with brindle markings. Both this big puppies were rescued from the ACC and found as strays.

**Interested in Adopting a DOG?

**Interested adopters should visit BARC shelter. We are located in 253 Wythe Avenue, in the Williamsburg part of Brooklyn. There are more dogs available than our Web listings indicate. We advise people to come and walk some of our dogs and play with our cats to get a better idea of which animal would be best for them. We are open for adoption, Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm - 5pm. Please come at least 2 hours BEFORE closing.

Dogwalking hours are: Monday to Friday - mornings:9am to 12:30pm and 5pm to 7:30pm. Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 1pm.
Cat loft is open from Tuesday-Saturday from 12pm - 5pm

We require an adoption fee of $150. This covers, in part, the extensive medical care all of our pets receive before adoption, including:

* examination and treatment by a veterinarian
* spaying or neutering
* current vaccinations against distemper, kennel cough (dogs) and rabies (if the pet is old enough)
* testing for feline leukemia and feline AIDS or heartworm (dogs)
* deworming, and
* microchipping (dogs)

All adopters are required to complete and sign BARC's adoption agreement.
